Major Somnath Sharma was the first recipient of Param Vir Chakra, India's highest military decoration. He served in Burma during the Arakan Campaign of World War-II. He was awarded Param Vir Chakra (Posthumously) for an act of gallantry in J&K during 1947 in fighting the Pakistanis.
